To fully enjoy what Shillong has to offer, pick one or all of the
following options:
Option 1 - Caving Experience:
Krem Kotsati-Umlawan System: It has surveyed length of 21.5 kms and is
currently the longest cave in the sub-continent. This cave offers the more
adventures tourist a wonderful through-trip with big easy passages,
crawls, climbs, swims, a bit of underwater and an 11 metres high
waterfall. It has 24 entrances, both horizontal and vertical.
OR
Krem Rupasor (Krem Sweep): The cave is situated just a few minutes walk
from behind the village school, in a depression. It has beautiful
stalactites and stalagmites. It has a chamber of cathedral proportions.
The length is 970m.
Option 2- Local Sight Seeing:
Elephant Falls: 12 kms on the away from HOTEL POLO TOWERS, the mountain
stream descends through two successive falls set in dwells of fern-covered
rocks. It's a beautiful sight especially during the monsoon season and is
a favourite picnic spot amongst the tourists.
Shillong Peak: Shillong peak is the highest point of the state at about
1,965 mts. above sea level and 10 kms away from the city of Shillong. Its
a great favourite among tourists for a stunning bird's eye view of the
city. On a clear day it gives a glimpse of the majestic Himalayas and the
spreading city below.
Shillong Golf Course: Shillong's golf course is just a tee away from Hotel
Polo Towers. A beautiful 18 holes course is highly regarded among golfers
from all over the world, who come to Shillong to test their skills on its
greens. Set at an altitude of 5200 ft. and often referred to as the
Geneagle of the East. The famed Golf course was set up in 1898.
Umiam Lake: Surrounded by Sylvan hills and wrapped in the beauty of green
Khasi-pines and the azure blue skies is the majestic Umiam lake. This
place has been often compared to Scotland. The lake situated just 15 kms
from our hotel has left a lasting impression on each and every person who
has come to this lake.
The Water Sports complex situated in the lake provides choice of
row-boats, paddle- boats, cruise boats, sailing boats, water scoters and
speed boats.
Either the Museum OR Lady Hydari's Park & Ward's Lake
Don Bosco Centre for indigenous Cultures: A three-in-one institution
combining with a research and publication centre, for promoting and
preserving the rich cultural heritage of North East India – a unique
fusion of all the sister states under one roof.
Lady Hydari Park: A popular spot both with locals and tourist, it is
located in the heart of the city well maintained garden and
mini-zoological park. Lady Hydari Pak was named after the wife of Mr.
Akhbar Hydari, the first governor of Assam who assumed charge on the eve
of Indian Independence.
Ward's Lake: A feast for the eyes. A small lovely lake situated in the
heart of Shillong with boating facilities. This artificial received its
name from Sir William Ward, Chief of Assam in 1893-94 because of his
personal interest he took in beautifying the park.
Option 3- Cherrapunji
Sohra: Sohra (Cherrapunjee) is a favourite must see tourist destination
the wettest place on earth the annual average rainfall being 11,500
millimetres, a dream land of fog and clouds. The slopes of Sohra towards
Bangladesh are famous for living root bridges, very rarely to be found
elsewhere in the world, as also the famed orange orchards and honey.
Mawsmai Caves: It is myriads of stalagmites and stalactites caves. It is a
well lighted cave.
Krem Mawmluh:The cave is situated approximately half a kilometre west of
Cherrapunjee, adjacent to small hamlet of Mawmluh. This cave has a line
river passage with impressive passage proportions. It is an ideal cave for
tourists, offering a bit of everything. With a length of 7.1 km, it is
currently t he 7th longest in the Indian sub-continent.

Nohkalikai falls: This was named after Nohkalikai, a beautifying young
lady who roamed these ills and valleys stand testimony to the fact that
most of nature's creation in Meghalaya has a tale or a legend associated
to it making it more meaningful and exciting for any visitor.
Option 4 -Nartiang Village & Ancient Durga Temple
Nartiang: Located just 63 kms from Hotel Polo Towers, Nartiang can be
described as garden of monoliths with varying heights. The tallest
monolith is 8 metres high. It is believed that the erstwhile Jaintia Kings
ordered these monoliths to be erected.
Durga temple: The Durga temple at Nartiang has become a favourite
destination for Hindus. In conformity of the Khasi custom of not using
figurine images of God and Goddess, the image of Durga is represented by a
plantain trunk decked with marigold flowers. Close by, within walking
distance is the Shiva temple where one can see the remains of ancient
cannons.
Option 5 – Jakrem Hot Water Spring & Mawsynram
Jakrem Hot Spring: It is one of the few hot water springs in Meghalaya. T
is located 64 ms from Shillong.
Mawsynram: Very popular among Hindu devotees, at a distance of 55 Kms from
Hotel Polo Towers, is the Mawiymbuin Cave. The place is known for the
spectacular stalagmites and stalactites formation inside the cave. It has
a unique attraction to offer tourists on the pilgrimage trail, in the form
of a natural Shiva Linga which receives steady drops of water from a stone
shaped like breast situated directly overhead.
Option 6– Nongkhnum Island
Nongkhnum Island: the Nongkhnum river island, said to be one of the
biggest river island in Asia, covering a geographical area of five square
kilometers, is twelve kilometers from Nongstoin, the district headquarters
of West Khasi Hills.
Option 7 – Mawlynnong Village
Mawlynnong Village: It has earned to be the cleanest village in India. It
is situated 90 kms from our hotel and besides the picturous village, it
offers interesting sights such as the living root bridge and another
strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock.
